GPO deployed printers randomly disappear from client

We have network printers deployed using group policy.

The GPOs were created from the Print Management Console on a clustered print server by simply right-clicking the printer and selecting 'Deploy from Group Policy'.
This adds the printer path under User Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Deployed Printers.

The problem we are seeing is that individual clients will have their network printers randomly all disappear.  It's completely random and usually does not happen to the same person more than once.  It also seems

Doing a gpupdate /force does not fix the problem.

The only solution we have found is to either 1) remove the printers either be removing the GPOs and gpupdate /force, 2) logging in, 3) adding the GPOs and gpupdate /force, 4) and finally log in again.

Or by deleting the printers in the registry and running gpupdate /force.

This workaround works every time.  The main problem is the lost productivity in the mean time.

Event Viewer doesn't show any problems with Group Policy so this is puzzling.

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can provide.
