Is group policy processed as before as a user logs on?

When a user logs on, does the group policy engine completely finish processing the policies before it allows the user to logon (assuming there is no issue processing the polices\network connectivity issues)?

We currently use batch file logon scripts and I'd like to move to group policy preferences. I just want to be sure that after the user logs in there isn't a delay before their drives get mapped or their printers are setup.

They way it works now is that they logon, and are told to wait for the command prompt to close (their logon script) before they do anything. Obviously this is not ideal, I just need to know that if we use GP prefs their mappings and printers will be setup before they get to their desktop- so there is no period after they get in where their drives are still mapping.

Thanks in advance.
