Deliver Common Desktop Shorcuts

Hello everyone,

I work for a company that support schools, at the moment the way we carry installations is with roaming profiles and folder redirections, folder redirection includes Documents, Favourites, Desktop etc. This works pretty well I know some people don’t like the idea of roaming profiles but for us it has been quite a good experience.

Most of the software is deployed via active directory or via other means. All the desktop shortcuts are redirected from a shared location on the server- all this is fine, the issue is when we have to deploy certain software on certain workstations.

Workstations with the specific software installed have the icon present but ones with software not installed have a dead icon -  we are not talking about 1 or 2 pieces of software here because I can tackle that with item level targeting.

Question is- is there a way to hide the icon/s on those workstations which don’t have the software installed or is there workaround available or desktop delivery software available that will do this.

I had been just been brain storming, with WMI is it possible to scan the program files folder for all the applications and deliver shortcuts on basis of that - I don’t know may be I am wrong

Thanks in advance
