How to deploy a local printer by Group Policy

Hi all,

I can manually add a local printer with a local port which is a UNC path of the shared printer on the print server (The detailed steps are in the below). But I don't know how to deploy this printer by Group Policy. Notice, it's not applicable to use the common way (deploying the SMB shared printers by accessing UNC path of the shared printers directly) in our organization.

  • Print server: Windows Server 2008 R2
  • Workstations: Windows XP/Vista/7 (GPP CSE has already been installed in Windows XP workstations but somehow some of which cannot work fine)

Thanks,

1. In Windows 7, from the Devices and Printers windows, choose Add Printer.
2. Select Add a Local Printer.
3. Choose Create a New Port. Then select Local Port from the drop down. Click Next.
4. When prompted fro the Port Name type path to the printer. It should be like \\PrintServerName\PrinterName
