Can group policy get applied multiple times?

HI,

I am planning for a GPO that would get applied on a WSFC cluster setup. I had a brief chat about it with our Windows Admin. He proposes a structure similar to below:

  1. GPO will be applied at OU namely "WSFC Cluster" and applied via Computer Configuration
  2. An AD group comprising of computer objects is placed within the OU namely "SQL 2012 Servers"
  3. The following computer objects are added as members to the AD group
  • WSFC cluster computer object
  • WSFC cluster member node 1 computer object
  • WSFC cluster member node 2 computer object (it's a two node WSFC cluster)
  • SQL 2012 virtual name computer object (SQL virtual name resource group that clients will connect to)

Technically speaking WSFC cluster computer object and SQL 2012 virtual name computer object would be CNAME alias to one of the member nodes either node 1 or node 2.

My questions is:

  • Based on the CNAME alias would the GPO get applied more than once to one of the the computers or is the GPO client intelligent enough to recognise that the same GPO is being targeted to that computer multiple times and hence not to process it more than once?

Thanks

Punit
