I have added a couple of languages to one of the computers in our school lab ...

Under my login, I can see the Language bar and can toggle between EN / KR / CH

But when a Student login, they cannot see the language bar and cannot switch languages in Word ...

What is the setting that can be forced via a GPO to make that available to restricted Users ???

Display messagebox at startup

I have made a batchfile which uninstalles office 2003 and installs office 2010. Office 2010 is configured thru OCT so starts in the batchfile with a msp file.

Uninstalling and installing 2010 is started thru a computer startup script in Group Policy.

Installing goes fine however in the OCT i have configured that the user can see that office is beiing installed, this is however not displayed on the users system. Also build in a command in the batchfile that a screen must displayd that office is beiing installed, also this box is not displayed.

Conclusion: when the batchfile runs thru computer startup policy no info boxes are displayed, nothing is displayed so there is nothing for the user to see when the install is ready, how can i arrange that when installing thru computer startup script?

When starting the setup with the msp from OCT office install the box display are displayed only thru gpo nothing is displayed?

GPO Prevent saving to "My Computer" in Windows 7

Hi there,

We have a problem with domain users "losing" work due to saving to "My Computer"

In group policy we "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" for the C: drive in this location:

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\File Explorer

How do we stop people saving to "My Computer"? We weren't even aware that you could do this until we started investigating reports of missing files and found them deep in the appdata folder - places like C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts

Thanks,
Kieran.

GPO for Windows 8 users "Connect Automatically"?

$

Hello,

We have a number of Windows 8 and 8.1 tablets that use 3G to connect to our corp network.  We would like to make sure this connection has the "Connect Automatically" setting enabled.  I am using the Group Policy Manager on a Windows 2012 server and can't see that it can be changed, but does anyone know the registry path for this as I can then use the GPO to replace this setting?

I'm tried using procmon (real-time registry viewer tool) to see if it shows up what registry key is changed, but so much information comes in I can see what it might be.

Forbide - Mobile Removable Devices / Media Removable Devices

Hi everyone!

I have a problem about IT-security.

In our company we are using Windows 7 Professional/Enterprise Edition.

We could easily block/forbid using of Storage Devices such as Pen Drives, USB-Flash Drives, SD-Cards via USB port on a Software Level, but we couldn't block/forbid using ofMobile Removable Devices / Media Removable Devices such as Mobile Phones, SmartPhones, Tablets, MP3 Plyaers!

When you connect SmartPhone to PC via USB cable, it is detected as Removable Device (NOT as a Storage Device!) and can be easily used for copying Information from PC.

The question is : "Is it possible to block/forbid Mobile Removable Devices / Media Removable Devices via USB on a Software level, without disable USB ports in BIOS?" Any solution(personal PC configuration or Group Policy) would be great.

Hope for your help!

Thanks a lot in advance!

GPO WMI Filters for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1

I'm looking to create some new GPO WMI filters to manage windows 8 computers in our domain. I see that 8.1 uses is v6.3 as opposed to v6.2 that 8.0 was. I am planning to create these filters for these types of workstations, please let me know if these seem correct:

WMI Filter to target: Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1 Workstations

QueryNamespace: root\CIMv2

Query: select * from Win32_OperatingSystem where (Version like "6.2%" or Version like "6.3%") and ProductType = "1"

WMI Filter to target: Windows 7, Windows 8.0 and Windows 8.1 Workstations

QueryNamespace: root\CIMv2

Query: select * from Win32_OperatingSystem where (Version like "6.1%" or Version like "6.2%" or Version like "6.3%") and ProductType = "1"

NK2 and custom.dic files to move with profile

I have a site set up with folder redirection. All works fine. They are running Office 2007 Pro and I need to have the NK2 files (cached names) and the custom dictionary files go with the profile. Is there any way to do this? There are a number of users that move from PC to PC so it would be nice for them to have those two files move with their profile
We run Windows 2008 R2 servers with Exchange 2010. Because of an application restriction, we cannot upgrade the Office yet. Workstations are Windows 7 Pro.

Force users to password Office 2013 files

Hi,

I have found the Group Policy that will force a password policy in Office 2013, but the user can still choose. We have a team that must password all there files. Can I force this in Group Policy?

Ideally, it would only be one type of template, but if I have to force for all documents then that is what I will do.

Any suggestions most welcome.

Best wishes

Michael

Issues w/ Internet 9 and higher GP using Windows 2008 R2

Network environment: Windows 2008 R2 w/ IE 11, Windows 7 w/ IE 9, and few Windows 8 w/ IE 11

We don't plan to upgrade to 2012 anytime soon, and access to Windows 8 machine is limited, so ideally, it's best to manage GP from either 2008 or 7 machine.  Currently, when I try to create a new IE GP from our 2008 DC, it only gives me the option of up to Internet 8, and I can't figure out why some policies apply and some don't.  For example, one for creating various URL favorites works, but one for setting a default home page doesn't.  Ran GPResult and report shows that both policies applied.

Is it possible for Windows 2008 w/ IE 11 to manage IE 9 and higher?  If so, what is needed to add IE 9, 10, 11 as an option in Group Policy Management?

Thanks in advance.

Windows 8 and IE10 not accepting Proxy Settings via Group Policy

$

We have recently introduced a couple of Windows 8 computers in our network, and we are having issues applying the Internet Explorer Proxy Server settings.

We use a Microsoft TMG 2010 server as our proxy server for accessing the internet. We have been using a GPO with the following settings to automatically configure our Windows 7 computers running IE9 with the appropriate Proxy settings:

User Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance\Connection/Proxy Settings

  • “Enable Proxy Settings” : Checked
  • “Address of proxy” : server.domain.local
  • “Port” : 8080
  • “Use the same proxy server for all addresses” : Checked
  • “Exceptions” : Here we have a list of several internal or partner sites that should not be proxied.

This GPO has worked beautifully for our Windows XP and Windows 7 users with IE 7, 8 and 9. Now with Windows 8 and IE10, this no longer works. I’ve therefore added a Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller to the network, and using GPMC on that new DC, I created a new GPO with the following settings:

User Configuration\Preferences\Control Panel Settings\Internet Settings\Internet Explorer 10

Now, seeing as these are preferences, it’s a little different.  But, I’ve “checked off” the option “Use a proxy server for your LAN” as well as “Bypass proxy server for local addresses”. Then I click on “Advanced” and setup all my proxy settings the way I would like them, including the proxy server name, port and exceptions list.

When this new group policy gets applied to my Windows 8 PC, the only setting that gets applied is the “Use a proxy server for your LAN”. It does not configure the name or port of the proxy server nor does it configure the exceptions list. If I go back to the GPMC, and edit the new GPO, the settings are all there. However, if I just view the settings from the main GPMC screen (without opening the GPO itself), I don’t see all of those settings (again, only the one “Use a proxy server…”)

What am I missing???

GPO won't apply to some OU's

I have 3 2008 R2 DC's using Group policys on multiple OU's. I found GPO's are not applying to Windows 7 clients in some of my OU's. If I move the computer to another OU policies are applied if I move it back they do not. I have created new OU's to test with and policies do not apply. Gpresults show the Default domain and a User Settings policy applied but the rest of inherited and linked policies do not. Very strange since this does not appear to be a client issue. I am on a very fast network and these GPO's have been in place for a long time.

Dear Techies,

In group policy under IE Maintenance I configured some settings like home page and proxy settings etc, now I removed all settings from group policy, I cleared every thing but still I can see the IE settings under group policy.

1)automatically detect settings                   Disabled
2)automatic browser configuration             Not configured.

Now the problem is I am giving some proxy settings in IE manually when I restarted the system proxy settings are getting empty and again I have to give them.

Please tell the procedure to remove IE Maintenance completely from group policy.

can anybody please help me to solve this issue.

Thanks in advance for your valuable support.

Printer is deleted at Log Off

I have Win 2008r2 on an HP DL360 server. The server is used as a Micros BO Point of Sale Server. There are no remote or network users only two administrators who work directly at the server. There is USB printer connected directly to the server. Every time one of the 2 admins logs off the one and only/default printer "goes away" and must be re-installed at next log on. Any ideas where the problem may be?

Thank you

GPO on local PC not working

$

Hello, guys.

I've been running into a problem lately. We are currently trying to automate the printer-installation in our company by using VBScripts.

Right now I have a OU set up with several computers that are in the same room and will therefore get the same printers. First we are placing a vbs.-file on these PCs by using a Group Policy on this OU. This script runs on Startup and works perfectly well. It places the file into the folder C:\Scripts (if the folder doesn't exist, it creates it).

The problem is the other GPO, which is being applied to all users in our company and runs on logon. It's supposed to look in the folder C:\Scripts and run our .vbs-file in there (If the computer isn't in the OU it obviously won't find anything and will not run any script). The problem is, it doesn't do that. If I run the script manually, it installs the printers. So the problem has to be with the GPO, right?

This is the path I have given for the script in the GPO: C:\Scripts\printer.vbs

I highly suspect this path doesn't work, though I don't know how to make it work.

I'd appreciate any help, thank you.

Greetings, TheRobidog

Uninstall Lync 2010 client, Install Lync 2013 using Group Policy/VB/MS Customisation Tool

$

Hi, I am using Group Policy/vb/Lync customization tools to deploy 2013 and remove 2010. The machines have Office 2010. The vb script is as below:

Dim objShell 'As Object
Dim objFSO 'As FileSystemObject

'------------------------------------------------------------------------------'
'-- SET OBJECTS
'------------------------------------------------------------------------------'

Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
strComputerName = objShell.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%COMPUTERNAME%")
Dim WshNetwork : Set WshNetwork = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Network")

objShell.Run """\\xxxxxxxxx - Do not Remove\Lync Install 2013 2010\Lync 2013 Outlook 2010\setup.exe"""

I have amended the OCT with relevant settings, Lync 2013 installs but Lync 2010 does not uninstall. Here is how i have it set:

In the Office Customization Tool - Set-up - Add Installation and Run Programs,

In target - pointing to the Lync2010 exe file (on above share)

In Arguments - /silent /uninstall

Is this correct?

Also, i would have thought that, Remove Previous Installations, it would have an option to remove Lync2010?

Anyway..pulling my hair out here!

Hope you can help.

Default printer - GPO problem

Hi all,

We have a policy in the domain to install printers to users. In this policy we have not defined any default printer for the user to choose the one they prefer.

No user was having trouble, except just a few who have migrated to this domain, the policy applies right but when they start the computer the next day, lose the default, can anyone help me with this?

The policy is configured in User Configuration -> Preferences -> Control Panel Settings -> Printers are shared printers.

Thanks for your help,

Hi!

Many of our domain connected pcs are automatically sharing the users folder on their pcs. How can we disable it through Group Policy instead of disabling it separately on each pc?

backup /restore/export local group policy windows 8.1

Is it possible to backup / export or copy the local group policy settings in Windows 8.1 and then restore / copy it to another tablet, so from tablet to another tablet?

I have searched on the tablet for %systemroot%\system32\grouppolicy and there are folders but i have made settings in the local gpo for the non administrators, but the folder user is empty. I have made 1 setting in the computer configuration for all users and it looks like in that folder machine is only this settings. The non administrator part is not in that folder?

Right click in the gpedit.msc gives no option to backup / restore or anything only export list but this is not a backup which you can backup / restore..
