When I create a GPO with a scheduled task to restart the machine an apply it to an OU it works perfectly. However, when I the same GPO with the same scheduled task to the domain it fails. Any suggestions as to why this happens? Is there a difference from a domain GPO opposed to an OU GPO?

How do you add the "Device Installation" template in the group policy editor as I need to edit the installation timeout? This template is missing in Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>System?

Thanks

Group Policy Modules Not Found

Hello everyone,

We have a lab of Windows XP machines where the User Policies (Shortcuts, Drive Maps) and Computer Policies (Services and Registry) are both showing that the Policy Module Cannot be Found.  I have noticed that some Drive maps do apply but these are being applied through NET USE in a startup script.  We have a mixed environment of Windows XP and Windows 7 with Server 2008 R2 domain controllers (servers running AD, DHCP, DNS, and acting as file servers).  We have about 2000 computers and this one lab is the only one giving us these errors.  The lab was recently rewired to move away from hubs.  I have tried reinstalled client side extensions, first I tried reinstalling on top of the current install, then I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling.  I still get the same errors.  I'm unsure of what else could be the issue.  Can anyone give me some tips?

I have no IE preference mode in my GPO

I'm trying to set IE 9 as our default browser via GPO.   All the links I've read on the internet say to click on IE Maintenance Only and then choose Preference Mode.   I have no preference mode.   In fact under IE Maintenace Only I only have 1 sub-key called INETCORP.ADM

So how do I set IE as the default browser?

Group Policy Preferences Files - Random hang

$

We are using group policy file preferences to deploy a few small files to our Windows 7 Enterprise clients.  Unfortunately, we have noticed a temperamental issue where the system will take a very long time to boot; as we have Verbose Status Messages enabled (via Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/Verbose vs normal status messages), we were able to see that this hang occurs during the Group Policy Preferences Files proccessing.

The longest quantifiable delay we have noticed is about 10 minutes.  Sadly does not appear to be something that can be reproduced at will - we receive complaints very sporadically, sometimes weeks aparts, thus our initial response was that it was likely Windows Updates being applied post reboot.  As this is causing some disruption, we enabled System/Group Policy/Logging and tracing a few weeks ago and UserEnvDebugLevel more recently in an attempt to capture logs and find the root cause of the problem.

The logs included below show a delay between the last log entry and "Leaving ProcessGroupPolicyExFiles()" (only a 17 second delay in this instance however).  The sections of gpsvc.log for this time period are also included for reference.  Has anyone else encountered such a problem?  Is this hang likely to be inside the files processing itself, or could another component be locking progression etc?

(Gap in logs starts at 15:44:25.486 and 15:44:25:517 respectively in the two files)

HI ,

I am in the process of testing server2012 in our domain .

And i got a small issue with the clipboard redirection computer GPO .

We currently allow copy /paste via RDP for some server .

Everything working fine for server 2008r2 , forest level 2008r2 all with all 2012 template up to date .

This gpo setting as been working for year without a itch under 2008r2 .

But i cannot get it to work under server 2012 or 2012 r2 .

my gpresult , rsop, and regkey setting show the the proper setting on my server2012 test server and properly applied .

All my other TS config are looking fine . Even my ts clipboard monitor running fine .

But my copy paste either in or out off the server is always gray out .

Anyone have a hint how i can debug this .

I have reset user profile even new account got this issue.

i am talking about

Windows Components/Remote Desktop Services/Remote Desktop Session Host/Device and Resource Redirection

Secure Virtual Machines

Hello,

I'm looking to get the best advice on setting up the following scenario. We have two Computers in a dedicated room that will be used to connect to a set of virtual machines. The Virtual machines will have a mapped drive that contains sensitive information so we want to lock things down so that users can only connect to these virtual machines (using RDP) from the two computers in the dedicated room and only certain users can connect to the virtual machines. Any ideas on how to best achieve this?

Cannot get rid of GPO SCRIPT error on all network PC's - suspect printers

I do believe that pushprinterconnections.exe is not needed for a network setup comprised of Windows 7 fat clients and Windows Server 2008 R2 for deploying printers, though at the time I tried to do this setup, I didn't know that. Even if that isn't the case, you would think that rolling back this GPO setting would've been easily done.

It was many months ago, so I will just say what I recall. I recall having to place the pushprinterconnections.exe file in the appropriate GPO startup/shutdown/logon/logoff folder and I was trying to get it to work and noticed it didn't work well and caused user errors/problems, so I pulled the GPO policy and deleted the pushprinterconnections.exe. Ever since that date, every 2 hours on ALL clients on the network I get the following error:

"Windows failed to apply the Scripts settings. Scripts settings might have its own log file. Please click on the "More information" link."

THERE ARE NO STINKING SCRIPT SETTINGS TO APPLY!!! I TOOK THEM OFF, SO WHY IS IT TRYING TO APPLY THEM???? THERE IS NO "MORE INFORMATION LINK" ANYWHERE TO CLICK!! .... ALL I GET IS THIS GENERIC INFO.

And this "The system cannot find the file specified." leads me to think that its still looking for the pushprinterconnections.exe file at the client PC's, because I do not know what other file it would be looking for and I experimented with no other file... except perhaps a logon script (which was removed as well).

Once I have removed this error I'd like to continue to try to deploy printers "per workstation locale", but I will not add insult to injury and mix things up till I can get rid of this generic error which I know surfaced when I was experimenting with the pushprinterconnections.exe file.

Lastly, is there some way to "step through" the GPO's as they are applied on the server? Where should I look to see what the server is doing with the GPO's to get more details on this problem? I have looked at the report of GPO's applied to the network and there ARE NO SCRIPT GPO's in effect.

Event log output below which repeats every 2 hours on all client PC's. HELP!!!

fine grain policy no expiration password policy question

$

I recently had service account passwords appear to expire even though they have a Fine Grain Policy set with the maximum password age set to (never).

The Default Domain policy  maximum password age is  set to 365 days.

The Fine grain Policy maximum Password Age is set to (never).

When I look at a user that is a member of security group, the msDS_ResultantPSO correctly lists the FineGrainPolicy that I have set to NoExpire which uses the (never) option.

If I use a net user username /domain option on a user that I have verified is in the group and has the correct ResultantPSO, I show a Password Expires date of 1 year from the last set date.

Is this the correct way to determine when the password will expire if fine grain policies are being used?  Or Even though Fine grain Policy is suppose to trump the default domain policy, does this only work if the Fine grain Policy is more restrictive, eg 90 days in fine grain would work because it is less than 365.  Or am I missing something else?

Thx JohnJ

Setting Auditing events GPO

After looking over many, many articles on setting GPO auditing I'm now about bald.

Here's what I got; 5 DCs one is 2k8 the rest 2k8R2. I'm at forest level 2k8 and single domain.

When I set local auditing (example; Logon (success/fail)) using GPO only the 2k8 DC will retain the settings. All other DCs revert to "no auditing" after logging off or reboot. When I run auditpol /get /category:* All settings reflect no auditing on all 2k8R2 DCs but when run on the 2k8 it works correctly.

I've tried setting the "Audit: Force audit policy subcategory settings" to disable and that didn't help either.

I've read where someone deleted "all" of the audit.csv files on the DC to resolve this but I'm hesitant to do that. I really need to get this resolved quickly as our firewall authentication relies on the security log showing logons/logoffs.

Thanks. Richard.

I have more than 200 GPOs on the AD DOmain

Half of the GPos were created by sveeral different people or are owned by the domain admins

How can I change all of then, to a new owner, using the more "quick and easy" method?

there a tool/utility for that? (like icacls.exe/subinacl.exe?)

There is a VBS function or PS cmdlet?

Folder Redirection - Scheduled Sync

Hello All,

Currently we have users on folder redirection and we have an issue where the performance is poor due to the fact that

their Desktop/Documents is over the network.

Is there anyway of controlling the sync so that the users can constantly work on the offline(local) copy even though they are online?

Example....during working hours they work on the local copy and during the night sync enables during the night?

Thanks

PC Lockout by Workstation Group Policy

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to roll out a group policy to auto-lock pc's via hostname opposed to username / security groups. I already have one working via user and security groups but i need it to be by workstation.

Can someone here point me in the direction of how i can do this I have already enabled loopback processing but i do not need it by user just by the host. When i add a user to the policy it works but when adding just the work station it is denied by security filtering

Thanks in advance,

Marc

Windows 2012 R2 / 8.1 Group Policy ADMX template

Hi,

I have domain with W8K / W8K R2 DCs and the forest functional level is W8K. However recently I have started to introduce W12K and 8.1 member servers and host PC to the domain therefore I created a central store and loaded the W12K R2 and 8.1 GPO template but when I attempt to create a new GPO on a W8K R2 server using the GP management console I am unable to see some of the policy settings. For example under Application Console>AppLocker I do not see Packaged app Rules. However if I installed the group policy management console on  W12K R2 member server I can see all the new GPO settings.

My question is if I create a GPO for Windows 8.1 on the W12K R2 member server will it work? Also I am having problems opening the Windows App store on Windows 8.1 PC that are joined to a domain.

The error recorded in Windows Events is 5973 Apps.

We use WSUS to deploy updates on all workstations, however, when windows 8.x users sign on, they can still receive the message "Important Updates are available. Run Windows Update...." which of course they can't.

How can we use GP to prevent that message from being displayed at sign on?  Thanks.

Windows server 2008 R2 sp1, windows 7 64bit workstations

earlier i was figuring out why my gpo updates are not being received but as it turned out, they are but very slow. like one workstation received the new proxy settings 4 days later. the others are receiving only partial gpo info.

is there a way to know (like traceroute) why gpo replication to workstations are taking too long?
