Hey All,
I'm fairly new to Group Policy and have been tasked with coming up with a GPO to apply to classroom computers that will address user's needs during the day while being strict to conserve power at night. (Server is Windows 2008, clients are Windows 7) To attempt to accomplish this I created a Group Policy and made the changes to the Balanced (Default) power settings for the day time where computers are effectively always on and then configured Item Level Targeting for the Night time (strict) policy. I did this within the Computer Configuration (due to the fact that this setting is not based on which user is logged in) and although my daytime power settings were applied it doesn't switch over to the night time policy.
From what I've read this is because of the interval at which group policy is checked. On our server it's simply set to the default but even after 120 minutes had passed (taking into account the 30 minute variance) from the changeover it still doesn't kick
in. My concern is also that I've read this on technet re: group policy refreshes:
"Consider notifying users that their policy is updated periodically so that they recognize the signs of a policy update. When Group Policy
is updated, the Windows desktop is refreshed; it flickers briefly and closes open menus. Also, restrictions imposed by Group Policies, such as those that limit the programs users can run, might interfere with tasks in progress."
I don't think the flicker would be bad but closing a professor's Powerpoint presentation in the middle of class, or stopping a video they were playing would be unacceptable.
I'd be most grateful for any wisdom or advice you can impart.
Thanks!
Jason
